Mary or Martha New Year

Are you starting your New Year’s off like Mary or like Martha?  Mary and Martha were two sisters who welcomed Jesus into their homes. (Luke 10:38-42)  Martha was busy making preparations for Jesus.  Mary was busy spending time with Jesus.

Have you ever spent so much time getting ready to do something that you never actually do it?  Every time I get ready to loose weight, I research the best gym. I look at new diet plans, buy new workout clothes and write a schedule to start on Monday.  Yet, when I actually get ready to do those things I seem to fall short.  I look at those people who just do it and I am in awe!

Mary did not care about the preparations, she just sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. (Luke 10:39)  She was focused on what was most important, spending time with Jesus.  When we spend time with Jesus, he provides us with direction for our day.  He tells us what we can do to be the most effective in our lives.  So many times we start our New Year with a list of what we want to do but we haven’t spent anytime with Jesus asking Jesus what should we do?

If God knows the purpose and plan for our lives, then why do we keep trying to direct it without Him?  Choosing to have a Mary start to your New Year means that you are choosing to spend time with Jesus by praying, reading your bible and listening to the word of God.

Here are a few suggestions on how to have a Mary New Year:

  1. Read your bible everyday.  Not sure how to do this, we have a Bible reading plan or Online Version that can help. If you read both the Old Testament and New Testament Readings you will complete the entire bible in one year.  If that’s too much then just read through the New Testament plan, it’s only once chapter per day!
  2. Pray everyday.  This may seem really scary, but pray is just a conversation.  You don’t have to have a method or even have years of practice.  Just begin by finding a reason to thank God every day.  If you want to expand your prayer life then check out our monthly prayer calendar.  It will give you a specific area to pray for each day of the month.
  3. Journal.  Write down a specific passage that caught your attention and why?  You don’t need a special book just grab a regular notebook and get started!

One great way to have a Mary start to the New Year is through our Operation Solid Lives program.  On January 26, 2014, Rohi Christian Church will host our Spiritual Boot Camp Level 1.  This is a four-week, jump start that will help you spend time at the feet of Jesus.  Take a look at this video to learn more about the tremendous change happens in Boot Camp.
