For the past few years, much of the West Coast, and parts of Mexico has been in a drought. Water levels are dangerously low. Yet, not only is there this physical drought we’re experiencing but sometimes, we can experience spiritual drought too.

The word drought in the Bible is the Hebrew word “simma’on” and it means “thirsty ground.” In a spiritual drought, this means we are thirsty for God. We need God in our lives, like the earth needs rain. We see drought happen in the Bible, if not naturally, when the people of God had turned away from Him and chased other gods, causing them to lack Him. Yet God just wanted His people to come back to Him, not be without Him.

So how do you know if you are dealing with spiritual drought? Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Are things dry or feel empty in my relationship with God?
  2. Do I look for things or people to satisfy or fulfill me?
  3. Do I usually forget to pray in the Spirit?

If you answered “yes” to one or more of the questions, you may be experiencing spiritual drought. God does not want this for us. Next week, we are going to talk about how to deal with this. Today, let’s acknowledge and worship the One who sends the rain.

Jeremiah 14:22 ESV: Are there any among the idols of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are You not He, O Lord our God? We set our hope on You, for You do all these things.
